Breeze of Change, Bridge of Consistency

The leaves dance in swirls across the road as I drive to Sonlight. The weather is clear, but the wind is cold. The season is changing.

Last week we sat down and talked about the future of Sonlight. Once again, in talking through our options, our plans, our dreams, our general manager asked: "Are we pursuing this just to make money?"

There was a pause as we all seriously considered it.

We had just been tossing around ideas on how to break into a new market. We really do want to make money. We absolutely must stay profitable if we are to continue. But after a moment's reflection, we all agreed:

We don't do things just to make money.

We do what we do because we want to expand our influence. We want to expand our influence because we believe we have something great to offer: The best homeschool curriculum in the world--even if it's not for everyone.

Making money is a part of business, but it's not what Sonlight was founded on, and it's not what we're pursuing for the future. It was good to be reminded of this fact, especially as the breeze of change sweeps across Colorado. The bridge of consistency in mission and vision continues to be the path we walk.

Hey Luke,

I gotta tell you; posts like this scare me. In the past, when SL has made big changes, crazy things have happened.

It sorta gives me high blood pressure to read about SL changes on the horizon.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. Allow me to try again: As I considered the changing weather outside my window, I was reminded of something we'd recently reaffirmed: Sonlight is sticking to our original goals... and those are to provide you with excellent homeschool materials, not make a quick buck.

The post was a juxtaposition in my mind. There's always an opportunity to stray from our original focus, and I wanted to share about how we'd consciously stayed on target.

All that to say: This post was not about big changes. Of course, as usual, we are working really hard to make things better. ...whether our efforts prove helpful or not remains to be seen <smile>.

Sorry I didn't communicate that well in my post.

Does that help?
