Blog Mobile Reading

I currently used Blogger to power I like it because it's tied to my Google Account and allows me to connect with others with the same. But there are some things that irk me, especially since this is a corporate blog for Sonlight. I need certain features and tools that simply are not available yet (and may never be).

Today was the search for a mobile publishing/delivery tool for Smartphones with full browsers built in do just fine on this site. If you set up your smartphone to read my RSS, you're gold. But if your smartphone does not have a full browser and is not set to read this blog via RSS... well... then things start to break down. And I need to change that.

Enter my Mobile Site hack. Ideally, when your smartphone loads this blog, you will be presented with the above link. That's the idea. I can't test it because my phone is, well, not as smart.

Luke's Phone

If you have a smartphone, would you mind directing it to and, if it's there, clicking on the Mobile Site link? After that, please swing back here and tell me how it went.

Because at the moment, I have no idea if it works.

I hope to find a more permanent solution someday, but for now this will have to do.

I tried it out on my iPhone and it pretty much looked the same as if I had clicked the link on my PC (which is where I'm typing this from). So, I don't know how that helps you...if at all...

OK, Luke, I checked this out on my BlackBerry. When I went to, I arrived at a page that looked a lot like the page I see on my desktop computer, except there's a link for "Mobile Site" at the top. I clicked on it & was taken to a list of links to your last 9 blogposts, with the first couple of lines of the post visible. I clicked on the link to this post, and was able to read the blogpost.

The only issue I see is that there's no way to comment from the phone. Now, I'm not likely to read blogs from my phone, nor to comment, just because of the tediousness of reading a small screen & typing on little keys, but it'd be nice if there was that option for those days when I'm out & about and just HAVE to read your blog! :)

On another note, as SL's Media Specialist, you REALLY should have a smarter phone!!

P.S. As long as you're working on making your blog more friendly to smartphones, could you put in a word with the "powers that be" that it sure would be nice if the forums were more smartphone-friendly? Thanks! :)

Luke, my BlackBerry is bottom of the line and does not have full browser capabilities, but I was able to read the blog without a problem. I was also able to access the comments and could have posted a comment of my own from my BB (I didn't because it's just easier to type it on the computer than on the phone!).

Hope that helps!

Thanks for checking, Nicky! I'm glad that my blog looks good on one of the hippest pieces of technology out there <smile>.

Leslie, you found my added "secret" link! I'm glad that worked! <smile> Hmm... that is a good point about not being able to comment, though. Going to have to work on that.

As for a mobile version of the Forums, that is a fantastic idea. I'll be sure to pass it along, but it may be a while in coming. Much like a smartphone for me <smile>.

That helps a lot, Ann! Great to hear <smile>. Thanks!

Luke, I have a phone that browses the internet (I rarely use Facebook from any other device), but was unable to find a link to a mobile version of your site from said phone. I was able to load the full version of the page, which (though cumbersome) worked well enough.

Thanks for the update, Heidi. I haven't thought about mobile blogging in a long while, and I'm not sure what more I can do at this time. I really hope Blogger launches a mobile tool soon...
