Education sans Academics

So much learning takes place outside of the academic setting. Here's one example that we got to participate in yesterday:

Tower Building

Motor skills, physics, color and shape recognition, socializing... naturally with just a bucket of blocks.

Don't forget gravity lessons when someone knocks down the tower. And maybe first aid when someone gets bonked on the head...or is that just with boys? Blocks are a great learning toy, and education without academics is our favorite way to do school. Looks like a fun day!

They totally got several lessons in gravity <smile>. They would frequently say, "Collapse!" when one of the towers would topple.

So many lessons with blocks......& like Heather said-so much of learning is before the books come out & after they are put away for the day!

Agreed. Much of what we learn happens outside of formal schooling. Not to say schooling isn't important, but that learning is ideally a life-long process that we participate in all our lives <smile>.
