Name Dropping

This post isn't really about name dropping as much as it is about "title dropping"--which isn't an official term.

Hence the title.

Just like it's lame to say, "Well, I was talking to Luke Holzmann the other day and he said..." to try to impress your friends that you've been to a blog as famous as this one <cough> ... so is it uncool to drop titles: "These people are nuts. They also homeschool."

But such is the way of the media. Just give this little article a read.

It's right up there with: Homeschooled child dies at home! Homeschooled child is awkward! Homeschoolers are terrorists! Homeschooled child raised by wolves only to meet attractive girl from city, abandons family in favor of others of his kind!

It's annoying.

Of course, the media do a lot of name dropping as well. So this isn't very surprising. In fact, just last week, I was talking with Chuck Norris about this very subject...

P.S. If you feel up to it: Help boremetotears win an iPod Touch. I agree: It would be funny. And the video he links to is quite well done. I was impressed.

So I was talking to my 2-year-old the other day...

Wait, that doesn't work, does it?

Good post... I particularly like the wolf part.

But what if the girl moved to the country and helped the pack open doors since they don't have opposable thumbs?

I'm sure she'd be on Dr. Phil for her problem with "enabling" soon after. ;-)

PS Can I please name drop your name too?

i had a bit of a chuckle to read your post about name dropping. Last night my husband was asking me about the people who follow my blog... "Who's Luke? Do you know him?" To which I replied, "Oh, Luke. Yeah, he's from Sonlight. I mean, I don't really know him. I've seen him on the forums and I read his blog.... but not like I know Paula or Anita, etc." hehe

oh, and i'm officially a fan of Will it Blend, now. : )

I was talking to Bob Sacamano the other day...

Does that work? [Or do you have no clue to the reference?]

I do like this post, it is so true. I love it when someone tries to name drop and everyone around is totally clueless.

I mean, if you have to explain the name you dropped, you may as well give it up. You know?

Why is it they always have to include a title? I mean, most of the people who kill other people went to public school, but they don't specify that. But if the person was homeschooled, that is sure to get mentioned. It's crazy. Oh, and they are likely to spell it home-schooled. I've noticed that people for something use one word (homeschool, homebirth, breastfeed), people who are neutral use two words (home school, home birth, breast feed), and those opposed use a hyphen (home-school, home-birth, breast-feed). It's really kind of strange how that goes.

hahaha.. I was just dropping YOUR name on Tuesday! My friend has older children then I and mentioned how much her middle son enjoyed the Son Light curriculum so of course, I had to tell her I knew you, sort of! She thought that was cool. :)

Melonie, yeah, that doesn't quite work <smile>. Glad you liked my little allusion to The Jungle Book <smile>.

SaraJane, glad to spread the Will It Blend love <smile>.

Jill, umm... I admit: I had to google Bob. And, yes, for a name drop to work at all, people have to know the name <smile>.

Butter, that is an incredible observation! I love it <smile>. But, yes, it's totally annoying that they drop in the title. <ugh>

Jennifer--and everyone else--please feel free to drop my name any time you like <smile>. Since we're all friends here, it's okay. Don't pay attention to that part of my post <laughing>.

I'm honored to have you all as my friends <smile>.
